ALTA Teacher Education Workshops

The ALTA 2000 conference took place in
Philadelphia from April 13-16, 2000. The first workshop was
led by Lioba Moshi (UGA) and was on Integrating the Use of
Video in Language Teaching: Curriculum Development (workshop
sponsored by the University of Georgia).
Participants viewed videos used by Professor
Moshi in teaching Swahili, and learned how to extrapolate
various classroom activities, such as listening comprehension,
memorization, and writing exercises, from what is shown in
the videos. Workshop participants took part in these activities
and learned how to use them when teaching their respective
languages.

The NALRC sponsored workshop led by Professor
Sally Magnan (a French professor at UW-Madison) on Competency-Based
Language Teaching and Learning and the Role of Technology,
Parts I and II.
Workshop participants were shown models
that Professor Magnan uses in her French classrooms, then
broke into small groups to complete and discuss the activities
outlined by Professor Magnan. They viewed videos and examined
worksheets that Professor Magnan uses in her teaching. Participants
were also provided with teaching strategies that incorporate
listening, reading, speaking/discussion, writing, and viewing
activities.
