2001 Conference in Washington DC
November 15-18, 2001

Adesope left Madison for Washington DC on Thursday November
15, 2001 for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign
Languages (ACTFL) Conference. They arrived DC around 11:30 a.m.
Work started almost immediately as they settled the issue of
registration for exhibitors. They set up the NALRC booth till
late evening on Thursday.
We had a large turnout of participants who visited our booth
between Friday November 16 and Sunday November 18. Statistics
show that over 800 people visited our booth. It was thrilling
to hear positive remarks from some of the visitors who stopped
by the booth. Participants at the Conference commended the efforts
of the Center and reiterated the role it is playing in the teaching
and learning of African languages in the US.

On Friday November 16, 2001 at 5:00p.m.,
all the Language Resource Centers (LRCs) had a meeting with
the Program Officers and Representatives of the Department
of Education at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. The Directors of all
the LRCs gave progress reports. Prof. Schleicher reported
that the National African Language Resource Center (NALRC)
has been carrying out different projects under 6 headings
which are listed below:
1. National African Language Program Coordination
2. African Language Materials Development and Dissemination
3. Professional Development for African Language Educators
4. Research in African Language Pedagogy
5. African Language Program Development and Evaluation
6. Mini-grant awards for African Language Materials
She briefly discussed how the Center has
been operating under these headings. The meeting ended around
7:15p.m.
The conference was a huge success. They
returned to Madison around 6p.m. on Sunday 18th November 2001
with great hope of improving the teaching and learning of
African languages in the US.
Next year ACTFL Conference will hold at Salt Lake City.
