The African Storyteller

Lion-Child and Cow-Child

Carefully read the story excerpt and the accompanying commentary. Questions will be presented after select passages.

Story Excerpt:

space This is what the lioness did: she went to a village of people.
spaceShe said, "Whose village is this?"
spaceThey said, "The village of the chieftainess!"
spaceThe lioness said, "I wish to make friendship with the
chieftainess."
spaceThe chieftainess said, "Not I! I won't make friends
with a lion!"
spaceThen the lioness went back to the cow.

Commentary:

The opening section of this story reveals the theme in a brief confrontation between the lioness and a human chieftainess. The human makes it clear that there is no room in the human village for an animal. We shall return to this opening section later.
