Lion-Child and Cow-Child

This is what the lioness did: she went to a village of people.
She said, "Whose village is this?"
They said, "The village of the chieftainess!"
The lioness said, "I wish to make friendship with the
chieftainess."
The chieftainess said, "Not I! I won't make friends
with a lion!"
Then the lioness went back to the cow.

The opening section of this story reveals the theme in a brief confrontation between the lioness and a human chieftainess. The human makes it clear that there is no room in the human village for an animal. We shall return to this opening section later.
