The
Ebrahim Hussein Endowment
The
College of Letters and Science of the University of Wisconsin-Madison
is pleased to announce the establishment of the Ebrahim Hussein
Endowment for research in African literature. Thanks to the generosity
of Robert M. Philipson, an alumnus of the College of Letters and
Science (awarded a Ph.D. in 1989), the College will award $7500
each year to a full-time graduate student in any L&S department
to carry out research in Africa and/or archives outside of the United
States. The research must lead to a Ph.D. dissertation. Click

Conference
Support
The
Department of African Languages and Literature has a limited amount of
money (usually $500) available each academic year to support graduate
students who wish to attend scholarly meetings. To assure that all graduate
students have access to these limited funds, the following guidelines
are established:
Any
Department graduate student, at any level of his or her studies, may apply
for assistance in attending scholarly meeting.
Requests
for such assistance should be made in writing to the Chair of the Department.
The requests should be sufficiently detailed to provide information about
the nature of the meeting including a detailed budget of expenses.
Preference
will be given to students who are presenting papers at a Conference. A
copy of the paper (not an abstract) should be sent to the Chair, along
with the formal request.
The
applicant should include a copy of the letter from the conveners of the
Conference inviting the applicant to present their paper.
It
should be understood that the Department cannot pay the full costs of
travel to these Conferences. These funds will be used only for travel,
not lodging and meals. A detailed budget of costs should be presented
to the Chair of the Department along with the request.
Depending
on the availability of funds the applicant will be given a portion of
their travel costs.
During
the graduate student's academic career financial assistance for travel
will not exceed two hundred dollars.
Disbursement
of travel funds will be decided by the Chair, graduate advisor, and the
fellowship committee.
